I do just the opposite, and I never have had a problem. My theory is
that if you recirculate cabin air, the air conditioner will dry it out.
If you bring in fresh air, you will bring in moisture with it, so the
air conditioner has more moisture to deal with.
But your theory is wrong, because a car with people in it is more humid
(humider?) than the outside, even when the outside is very humid. You
may get away with your practice when you have no passengers, but add a
person or two, and you will notice a big difference between fresh and
recirculated air. In three minutes, you won't be able to see out the
windows with recirculated air.
