What would happen if this rule is not observed?

ALL AWD vehicles with mismatched tire sizes or pressures or wear, and
4WD vehicles when 4wd is engaged can suffer damage due to being operated
on dry, smooth pavement. Some may be more or less tolerant of
mismatches, and how long it would take for significant damage to occur
is variable.
