We'll be towing an enclosed 5X8 utility trailer 3700 miles round trip and would like to add a weight distribution/anti-sway system to our hitch because it'll be mostly interstate travel at speed, 70/72mph.

Around town I wouldn't bother, but I'd be more confident with it over these long-distances and higher speeds.

At just 1100lbs, the trailer is well within Subie's specs, but their manual advises against weight-distributing devices.
Any advice on how to proceed?
Thanks in advance,
RAH

What year, make, model? I have towed with my Legacies for decades without issue...or extra stuff.

The car is unit body and if Subaru says so surely not suitable for a weight distributing hitch.
At 1100# make sure to have enough tongue weight. 15% or more 10% is not enough to avoid sway.
3700 miles at 72MPH makes it smart to double check if you have enough engine and transmission cooling.
It would also be smarter to go 65mph. The 10% speed difference is probably a 20% load difference.
If you still want to go that fast make sure to have trailer brakes.

For reference, I have for many years towed with my 2000-2004 Legacies. 165 HP and torque. Trailer is usually ~1500# and the car is usually loaded to the gills.

My research showed 7%-10% of weight should be on hitch on a level surface, so I set it up that way. Monitor bearings and keep them greased properly. I push new grease through every 5k miles, which is sooner than necessary, for sure, but very cheap insurance. Also note proper inflation for the weight you are pulling.
