Hi everyone,
I recently bought a 2002 outback with 88k miles with the intent of fixing it up to be my daily driver.
Upon visual inspection of the undercarriage, I noticed that both bellows boots on the inner tie rods were shredded with grease everywhere.
It also looks like there was or is a slow oil leak. I tried to clean up as much as I could in order to see things better.
Symptoms:
I have some play at 9 and 3 on one tire, some knocking with sharp turning, pulling to the right while driving, shaking steering while slowing down from speed over 40mph and uneven tread wear on one tire. I don’t think I see any leaks on the rack, just a lot of grease from the inner tie rod/broken boot. There are no stains on my driveway and the power steering fluid has stayed the same.
Questions:
- Do I have to replace the whole rack and pinion or just the tie rods/boots?
Here are some images of the shredded boots, rack and pinion condition
Thanks for reading my post, please feel free to add any thoughts/ideas.
