Sunroof Mess

I opened my sunroof this morning and noticed a white, creamy substance on the rails, trim and basically all around the opening of the sunroof. I happened to be close to the Subaru dealer so I asked them. They said it was lubricant. I’ve owned cars with sunroofs before but have never seen such a mess. Is this normal?

It is a lithium based lubricant on the rails. It's also on my current '19 Legacy, previous '18 Legacy and was there on two General Motors passenger cars I've owned.

What you see does seem excessive, but it serves its purpose.
