STi In Snow

Back a few months ago, there were several discussions about how the STi
would perform in snow. Many believed it would be terrible because of the
way the DCCD works.

I have 205/50R17 Pirelli P210s on it, and now that we have had snow, I can
tell you, the thing is incredible in snow. If the DCCD is left in Auto, the
thing drives more like a RWD when you first take off. Then the DCCD does
its thing, and the car straightens up and pulls. If there is very little
traction, like ion ice, then I put the DCCD in manual on full LOCK. The car
will accelerate in a dead-straight line on ice; no problem.

While half of my neighbours, with their SUVs, can't get up my hill, the STi
plows through the snow quite happily, and annoys the neighbours at the sight
of a goofy-looking winged car leaving the snowplow in a cloud of blowing
snow.

It is a great car in the snow, just like all scoobies.

Love it, absolutely love it. You lose them on dry pavement and on snow
covered hills

Very cool! My little '02 OBW is a little dynamo in the snow too. I just plow
through ANYTHING in that little car. I did get rid of the Potenza tires and
switch to Michelin Arctic Alpin tires this winter, though. Man does that car
go well in snow!

When you put the DCCD into full lock are you locking the centre or rear
differentials?

The factory tires are awful in the snow! But, to be be fair, they do
tell you that in the owners manual. I changed to an All-Season tire
and I couldn't be happier. But, you have to remember you have 300
ponies under the hood so it doesn't take a lot of effort to break the
tires loose!

The factory tires are only for summer use though. But, yes, one has to keep
it out of the boost range or it does take off. However, with the DCCD in
full lock, at least it takes off in a straight line.

We have had a lot of snow here lately. And I have found that in full
lock the car does seem more controllable on really slick roads. I
would have thought automatic mode would have the same effect. But, it
does not.
