Radio won't turn off

We have a 2020 Subaru Outback that refuses to let us turn off its radio. Depressing the ON/OFF button does nothing - holding it down causes a pop-up box to appear asking if we want to turn of the entire viewing screen. In the interim, we're turning the volume all the down. Any advice?

Try holding the volume knob down for 15 seconds or so. Worked in my 2019 Impreza.

Hold down the Source button on the left spoke of the steering wheel until the radio shuts off.

The 'Source' button suggestion works. Thank you. Now, if I can just figure out why it won't turn off with the knob as it did when it was new.

May be a change due to a software update? My 2024 will mute the radio if you push the knob, but the radio stays on, just doesn't output audio. Pushing and holding the knob will turn off radio and display as you noted. I believe there is also an option via the display menus to turn off the display while leaving the audio output from the radio playing.
