Oh, dear. I noticed the oil pressure dropping the other day. Oil pressure
has been low since I bought the car, running from about 40 PSI at driving
speeds to near zero when Idling. But it would always get almost to 45 PSI
(halfway on the guage) from 30 MPH up to 65 or so.

The other day it started out as usual, but then started dropping the
warmer the car got, finally settling at about 25 PSI even at driving
speeds of 45 MPH. Never did that before.

Today things were back to normal, somewhat. Oh, note it has been warmer
the last two days than previous, reaching all the way up into the 20's or
lower 30's.

At any rate, I took it this morning on a service call, and it ran well,
but on the way home I got behind some goof in a Camry and decided it would
be better to pass. I ramped it up quickly to about 55 MPH, oil pressure
got up to about 45 PSI, and then settled ~40 PSI the rest of the way.

When I got home I parked the car and heard a strange noise from under the
hood, a rapping rattling noise. Kind of like clicking two hollow metal
balls together (is the best description). I shut it off and got a cuppa,
and when I came out I checked the oil. It was down about 1/2~2/3 of a
quart, so I filled it and started it. Same noise.

I drove it around a little bit, down to the store and back, and it seemed
to subside a bit. After 5:30, when it started getting colder I went to the
conv. store for another coffee, and it ran fine on the way down; still
made the noise slightly when I first started it, but it was totally gone
when I got to the store, about 2 miles. I shut it off when I went into the
store. Also, oil pressure was back to normal all the way down (cold).

On the way back the car was nice and quiet, but the oil pressure started
dropping as the car got warmer, until it was back down ~25 PSI again, and
drops to ~10 when letting off the throttle.

This does not bode well for our hero. So, especially for the Suby guys,
what am I looking at here...do I want to hear it? BTW, the noise seems to
be coming from the top-center of the motor, somewhere just to the driver's
side of the throttle body on the top of the engine. My AAA is paid in
full...am I looking at being stuck with a rod thru the block? It seems
something got starved out for oil after passing the Camry.

Any cheap fix, or just drive it until it goes to the crusher? Too bad, i
like the car, but it is borderline worth it to me to fix it.

From previous posts I understand that this car only has to last 'til
winter passes so would it be worthwhile just changing to a heavier
grade of oil ??

What's the temperature doing when the pressure drops ??

It's not really a solution to the problem, just masks the symptoms.

Well, it's been above 15 degress the last two days!

It was running OK prior to that, even in warm weather (45 degrees).

Any idea what might be going on? I'm in the dark. i do a lot of my own
work, and I understand the concepts well, but my thing is
electronics/computers. Cars are still a bit foreign to me...especially
Subarus (in more ways than one! ;) )

I'm more of a Toyota guy.

Replace the oil pump gasket and both problems will be solved.

I was wondering about that! The last Subaru I was looking at was an '88
AWD wagon. We took it in on trade, and it seemed OK but the body was more
rotten than my Coupe. I took it from the Used dealer I was working at to
the CarQuest I was working at, and the manager came out and said, "Shut it
off before it blows up, will ya?" It was then I saw the oil pissing from
the front of the engine and learned about the pump ring.

I'm just wondering about replacing the pump as well...

I don't know why johnicky suggested replacing the oil pump gasket, perhaps
it is a Subaru idiosyncrasy. When oil pressure drops as the oil temperature
warms, that generally is an indication of worn crankshaft and connecting rod
bearings. More viscous oil might help, but the correct fix is probably
measuring bearing thickness with plastiguage.

I don't know about this model, but on the older EA82 engines (around 1990
vintage) if the oil pump gasket is leaking, air is introduced into the
system and can cause the hydraulic valve lifters to rattle.

I would suggest changing to a thicker oil - 20W-50 or higher re the oil
pressure issue.

Changing an oil pump gasket should be a lot easier than changing bearings,
so that sounds like the way to go for a first step.

From what I have heard from talking to guys around here, the gasket seems
to be a fairly common problem with the 1.8L Subaru engine. Quick fix, and
real cheap...if I can find a place to work that's dry and above 30 degrees!!

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention...I topped up the oil with about 1/2 qt
Marvel Mystery Oil. Has worked for all my Toyotas in the past...but a Suby
isn't a Toyota now, is it? ;)
