New Subies and dual exhaust?

Looking at some of the pics of the new Legacy, I noticed something I hadn't
seen before. The new Legacies have dual exhaust.

I'm kinda of curious how the system is set up. On my first car, a Crown
Victoria, there were basically two separate exhaust systems, one coming from
each side of the V8 engine. I think there may have been a short pipe
linking the two in the middle, but they were indeed separate pipes.
However, I think newer cars with dual exhaust usually have just one big pipe
that splits into two pipes at the engine side and exhaust side. Not sure if
it makes any difference, but I'm just curious how Subaru set theirs up.

Well, it's conceivable that each exhaust pipe comes out of each bank of the
flat-4 in a Subie too. I don't know for sure, but it's conceivable.

I don't know either, and it is conceivable, but I doubt it. There's not
enough room under there for dual pipes all the way back, is there?

There's a single pipe in the middle guys and of a larger diamater than
after the split to the two rear mufflers.

Well, that answers that.

Wouldn't work anyway with a single turbo - they'd have to meet somewhere :)

It's like all the other "dual" exhausts these days - single pipe until the
end. Doesn't do much for performance over a single exhaust, but it looks
good :)

It's gotta do a little good. But it does remind me of the Wyland "Y" dual
carb "manifolds" for Ford V-8s of the 1940's. :)

When I hear some of the exhausts, not necessarily Subaru, around town I wonder
what the owners are really after, attention or what. The damned things can't
be tuned to reduce back pressure around peak torque frequencies. We used to
do that on our motorcycles for flatrack and hare and hounds. "Tune for maximun
noise!" ;-)

All you get out of the back of a Subaru are "mouse-farts" doesnt sound like
a real engine.
I laugh my ass off when the squids put this 4" little metal trashcans on the
end of a 3/4 pipe, yeah..they are fooling us into thinking it has a real
engine....NOT hahahaha

According to Subaru's latest "Drive" magazine, the dual exhuase system
is a true dual exhuast, one pipe from each side of the engine. Subaru
admitts the dual mufflers are for preformance looks, the dual pipes
increase exhaust flow.
If you are concerned about their new look, email Subaru. When I
did, I got a personalized letter develivered to my house because I
mistyped my email address. I was highly impressed with their level of
response and effect to get hold of me.

I actually like the new look - just not the price increases that have come
along with the look. And I've sent them several emails over the past 5
years about various things, and each time I've gotten a personalized
response, although a couple of them did appear to be "canned" responses to
frequently asked questions that weren't frequent enough to land on the
website.

I didn't get the latest Drive - my family members throw them away to avoid
feeding my obsession. ;)
