Need to replace clutch on 4th generation: Should I pull engine or transmission?

I've done many clutch replacements over the years and have always removed the transmission; this will be my first clutch on a Subaru: I read elsewhere that in some circumstances it may be easier to remove the engine than the transmission: I will be doing the job in my garage on my back, so pulling the engine seems very attractive. The car has 167,000 miles in Northeast winters...lots of rusty bolts to contend with. Are there any recommended write-ups on doing it either way? Tnx
 
Well, depending on how much rust, I'd pull the motor out
You might break the exhaust studs but at least you'll have the motor out to deal with them
It might go easy
I use rust penetrant and take a few days doing that first
Watch a few videos, place the AC compressor, still attached on a blanket on the fender
Use all the tricks
Pull the fans and radiator out first, use some thick cardboard to protect the condenser
Drop the trans down at the rear crossmember to get better access to the bellhousing bolts if necessary

"4th generation" is meaningless Gen Y & Z stuff. Try "year & model". (What a concept, huh?) then you'll likely get the info you need. For example, Gen 1 was a 360, 2 stroke egg with wheels? Right? No? Sure was. And Gen 2 was which one? That ugly little boxy thing that looked like it fell out of Godzilla's backside & got turned into the original BRAT? See the problem?
