My neice has a 2014 Forester with the 2.5L and it's knocking and there's metal in the oil (According to a dealer that changed the oil), so I think it's days are numbered.

Anyone have an engine to sell in the L.A./Orange, Ca area?
Anyo0ne know a great independent Subaru mechanic out there?

Is it worth it to rebuild this, or buy a long block rebuilt?

Thank you in advance!

Also, any recommendations for a good Subie Independent mechanic in the Orange area to swap motor in? Thanks again!

Unfortunate the oil filter was not saved, it can be cut open for an inspection.
The filter that is currently installed will have the same evidence.
If there is any "bottom end" damage to the crankshaft / connecting rod(s). expect the damage to continue to the cam shafts and cylinder head cam bores. The metal particles if evident, will flow through the entire assembly and into the oil galleries. A rebuild can be cost prohibitive depending on the damage and time consuming.
The long block may be less expensive and if in stock, faster to exchange.
Key word search "Subaru mechanics in orange California" brings up many shops but question "user reviews".
The community will direct you if a qualified shop is found or "knock on their doors".
