My Key is Stuck Half Way in the Ignition

Hi. Tried posting this earlier, but I believe I messed up. I am new here....

I have a 2014 Subaru Outback and i loaned the car to someone who parked it and found that the key would not release fully. I have searched around the web to find that this is a common issue. However, it seems like my situation may be a little different in that my key is stuck half way. It will not pull out or push in, and it will not turn either direction.

I have disconnected the battery as for now, but otherwise, it just beeps with the key alarm sounding.

If I press the button on the shifter handle as if I were putting it in reverse I hear a solenoid clicking in the steering column. I removed the shifter and pressed the metal tab at the base of the shifter and I get the same clicking.

I also tried unplugging the grey wire harness adjacent to the ignition switch, which disabled the key alarm beeper, but did not change the status of the key being stuck.

I also used the manual by pass lever adjacent to the shifter to try putting it in neutral. No change.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Again: the key is **halfway out** so I can't start the car.

Thanks
