Light AWD wind-up in 96 Legacy AT

My 96 Legacy GT Wagon with automatic transmission seems to wind up a little when
cornering. When the car is warm, it seems to hobble in very tight radius curves
at lower speeds.

I have had to replace the manual transmission on my 95 Legacy when it turned out
that the center differential had been destroyed (improper towing?) and showed
similar symptoms - just worse.

Is this normal for the AWD system in the automatic?

The AT has some 'issues' probably the main one to nail Fuji Heavy
Industries on is the lining of the tailshaft. Up until like '00-(IIRC)
the aluminum in parst of the clutch pack area was a wear surface. There
is a steel sleeve used in rebuilding those units now.
The other issues are problems with drivers not understanding the
instructions in the manual abiut towing and tire sizes and 'donut' spare
use and the FWD fuse.
If you have ever run different size (even due to wear) tires or the
donut on your AT soob the clutch pack and/or the duty solenoid 'C' can
be damaged leading to 'torque bind'. If you insert the FWD fuse and the
problem goes away, most likely the center diff in the AT needs reapair.
try searching the archives at www.usmb.net for extensive discussions of
this issue.
