I took my Legacy 2.5l in for it's 60k maintenance and they also did an oil and filter change. But looks like they overfilled it by 3/4". Anyone know if this is enough to cause cavitation and foaming? In the pic, my forefinger is centered on the full mark and my thumb is where the oil level actually is. You may need to zoom in to see the full mark divot.

Wipe off the dipstick and recheck to be sure. If it's over full make them correct it. Over filling is as bad, if not worse than under filling, depending on the degree.

Agree 100%, thanks, Dick. I'm familiar with the perils of overfilling and oil foaming/higher crankcase pressures that can result from it.

I forgot to mention that this dipstick reading shown in the pic was taken first thing this morning after I let the car sit overnight. It's a 100% accurate reading.

I ended up taking it back to the dealer and the service manager (not advisor) who used to be a tech said that the level was ok. I asked him if he was sure it's not going to cause any issues and he said he was and that if it was overfilled by double the amount is when I "would see smoke coming out of the exhaust and it feel like it's shifting funny like a transmission issue." I should have asked him to put that in writing, but I only thought about it after I drove off. After I thought about it some more, it didn't sit well with me and luckily I have a pump and hose that I use to get oil samples. I took out a full pint and and an oil sample and that left it about 1/8" to 1/4" over the full mark. I am sending that sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis and to have evidence if something should go awry.

Smart to use Blackstone. I suspect it is a non-issue. Engines that use a lot of oil are frequently overfilled a bit to minimize adding oil. :) Still 3/4" seems like a lot if the car cooled a bit and was indeed level (not the same as flat).

Thank you about Blackstone. I've been happy with their analyses and recommendations in the past. I'm hoping you're rihgt that it's a non-issue and I'm just being a worry wart. Great point about Subies oil usage and them overfilling, I did think about that, too, especially with the older 2.5's that had the oil consumption issue.

Just for the record, I took the oil reading while the car was in our garage, so as level as I can get it in the rolling hills of north Texas, LOL.
