Four Wheel Drive Service for 2001 Outback?

T

Tom

When is the scheduled maintenance for the four wheel drivetrain for an
Outback?
Several years ago I read something about scheduled maintenance for the four
wheel
but don't remember what was.

anybody know what I'm referring to?

Thanks

I've followed the factory mtc schedule (available at my.subaru.com i
imagine?) and seem to only recall diff and trans services at the
30/60/90/120 intervals.

I'm too lazy to look at the mtc schedule though, but I think it was no
more frequent than 30k, and quite possibly at 60k intervals in terms
of fluid changes.

On the automatic, there's just the auto trans fluid which lubes the
trans and the front differential and the front/rear torque split
clutchpack, and then there's the rear differential fluid.

Everything except the rear differential is inside the transmission.

Front diff is seperate and gets GL5 like the rear diff.

I should have been more specific- some years, yes, its seperate lube,
some years (such as my '03 outback) its ATF that circulates through
the rest of the trans. (no seperate fill/drain). Some reason I thought
it was a 4eat mentioned- from another of the OPs posts, the trans
flush one, I think.

The dealer even got confused on this one, how many years was it GL5
and how many was it ATF and part of the trans circulation system?
I don't think its just the H6 that has the ATF front diff, I'm pretty
sure the only diff between the H4 and H6 4eat trans is the final drive
ratio.

My (US) 03 OBW H6 4EAT has the ATF dipstick on the left (drvrs) side and
the front diff on the right (psngr) side.

Its a nice day, so I popped the hood.

Damn dealer.

I'd seen some debate on this, so when the dealer mentioned, after
changing all fluids for the 60K service (incl. a trans flush, judged
prudent since it was a regularly maintained car), that the front
pumpkin was lubed by ATF from the trans, I figured that settled the
matter.

I guess that's why he's the service manager- too dangerous to let near
the vehicles.

The front gear lube (that dipstick was nicely camouflaged by dirt
sticking to it) looks very clean, so I assume it was actually changed
and the service manager was just talking out his ass.

I had to dig deep into the left-hand engine bay to clean the PVC valve
on my H6, but haven't needed to get personal with the right-hand side
of the bay yet.
