Forester rear dome light puzzle

Hi All!

I have a small logic puzzle presented to me by my Forester.
1. The rear dome light will light when manually switched on.
2. The rear dome light will *not* automatically light with the rear
hatch open.
3. The front dome light will automatically light will light with the
rear hatch open.

So, I think that the open state of the rear hatch is sensed, due to the
front dome light lighting, but something prevents the rear dome light
from lighting in response to the sensed open hatch.

Anyone have any insights/ideas on how to track down and fix the bad
component?
Thanks!

I think it's a 3 position switch - try it in the middle.

I assume you know it's a 3 position switch (if it's like our Outback) so
- if you don't have it in the forced off position, the next most likely
issue is a bad switch.

I suppose I thought that the switch would just be so robust and simple
that it would be the last to fail. I will check it. Thanks!
