Forester '03

number 9

Hi!

Before I bought my Forester two years ago from a private party,
I watched this site for a while. It had 6,000 miles on it, and a recall
for the reverse(?) had been fixed.

I remember someone talking about a recall for the gamma sensor
and a re-program of the computer if the mileage was bad and occational
starting/ running problems occurred.

So... when I took the car inn for an oil change, I asked them why my milage
was so bad. They told me there was no recall on the computer, and the
bad milage was due to me using too high an octane (89) :)))))

I have also had occational problems with the compass. It went away when
I turned the auto-dim switch on and then off...........

Does any of this make sense???

I certainly woud appreciate some help here...

I believe the recall you are referring to was because if the car was
put in park and the brake released the car could move 10 inches or so
before locking. No big deal for me or anyone I know. There was for
some models a computer "reflash" available for some rare problem.
There was an oxygen sensor recall and the dealer should have ALL that
information if your car was effected and if the sensor was replaced.
If the dealer acts ignorant then call Subaru with your vin number. If
you wish to reset your engine computer back to the new setting just do
the following. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and press the
brake pedal several times to discharge the system. Reconnect the
battery terminal. The car will then beginning to "learn" the way you
drive. In a few tanks of gas you will have establish "your" driving
style. If you are an easy driver you will get better mileage after the
second tank or so. Don't forget to copy your radio stations as they
will be lost when you remove the battery thermal.
