Our 2020 Outback has a gross exhaust or chemical smell coming in through the vents at stoplights when the engine shuts off (auto stop/start), or when first turning the car on sometimes. It's inconsistent and comes and goes. Glendale Subaru claims they couldn't detect anything. I believe that there's something wrong and that we may be getting poisoned by exhaust fumes or leaking AC refrigerant. Does anyone have the same problem? I'm not sure how to investigate further.
If the engine shuts off at a stop light, does the exhaust output shut off? If so, do the existing exhaust fumes in the system just linger until it turns on again or what? Is exhaust anywhere adjacent to the AC system?
What does modern AC refrigerant smell like? Is it odorless or not?
Thanks in advance for any insights!
