Hello,
Recently my Subaru Crosstrek (2016) would not start (no crank, no start). I had it towed to a local dealership and they told me the BIU needs to be replaced for $810 parts + labor. I gave them the green light and gave them my two key fobs that I got when I bought the car.
Today they contacted me and told me that there are actually three keys registered with the car and that they cannot replace the BIU unless they have all keys. They said the only option is to take out the BIU, ECU and combination meter, ship it to Subaru and have them delete the third key so they can then program the new BIU to work with the car. They said that will cost upwards of $2,000.
From my understanding dealers can delete keys as long as they have one working key. Am I missing something here? Why do they have to send it to Subaru?
