Constant power to rear accessory outlet?

G

Greg Smith

I have a 200 Forester. I want to be able to charge batteries for an
R/C Airplane while the car is parked. Is there a way to supply power
to the outlet in the rear cargo area even when the ignition is turned
off?

A friend of mine has a car that only required the fuse be moved to a
different position in the fuse box to enable this feature. Anything
like this for the Subaru Forester?

AFAIK, no.
You'd have to trace the wire back to the front of the car and hook it up to
the battery or a constant +12v.
Make damn sure you put a fuse in line with it though - if you put a faulty
plug in it won't trip any fuses, it'll just overheat, melt, possibly catch
fire...

Next to the fuse box are several relays, at least in my Impreza the top
relay controls power to the rear outlet. If you can figure out the
connections to the relay, you can remove it and jumper out the contacts.
If you don't know what you're doing, then DON'T. Jumpering incorrectly
could short out any number of things.

Why not connect to the cigarete lighter socket.

Same thing as the rear, it's off when the ignition is off. I'd like to
be able to charge the batteries for the plane when the car is parked.

I think jumpering the rear outlet relay is probably my best bet.

Thanks!

You could find the source that powers the parking lights (you know, the
little switch on top of the steering column that makes you batteries go dead
after going to the car wash!)... it is constant 12V.

Another option would be to get a booster pack from Sams Club or your
favorite automotive store. That way you would not have to worry about
running your car battery down. Most of the booster packs have a 12v lighter
type outlet on the front.
