My 2024 Forester sometimes hums while parked in garage. I looked it up in the manual and I guess this is something that the brakes sometimes do, even though the car hasn't been driven for hours. The manual implied this was an ok thing, but I would like to understand it a bit more as it seems like a very strange thing. Its an easily heard hum that sounds like a very small motor perhaps is running. It always comes from my rear passenger side wheel, and it seem to happen fairly often. Today, for example, I returned home from a trip to grocery about 1:00 and at 9:00 I noticed the car was humming away. Anybody have any insight or experience with this ?

I’ve heard the same thing. Assumption was somehow the fuel pump was stuck on. I started the car and shut it off and it stopped. I was also concerned of the battery .

Noticed it last night for the first time, i was also concerned with the battery drain because of the cold temperatures, last night it was -20c. Picked up a booster today, merry Christmas to me…

Bmart: you suggest the E-brake as the culprit. I assume you mean the parking brake? I just bought this car new in April, and it has hummed this little tune off and on, so I am guessing its not because something is wrong with the parking brake. I have used my parking brake maybe twice. Are you suggesting that we use our parking brakes more often to keep brakes healthy? Please explain to a novice. Thank you!

As per page 9 in your owners manual - this could be sound that you are hearing.
Noise from under the vehicle
S00AK01
NOTE
You may hear a noise from under the
vehicle approximately 5 to 10 hours
after the ignition switch is turned to the
“LOCK”/“OFF” position. However, this
does not indicate a malfunction. This
noise is caused by the operation of the
fuel evaporation leakage checking system and the operation is normal. The
noise will stop after approximately 15
minutes.

Thanks Leo122 . Does anyone know what a fuel evaporatation leakage checking system is?? And I wonder if this happens more, or less, depending on the amount of fuel in the tank? I am curious!

This is likely what I heard. Definitely coming from around the fuel tank. Key cycling the ignition stopped it in my case.

Based on my experience with older toyotas, the sound is coming from a small vacuum pump that pulls a mild vacuum on the fuel tank and associated pipes/hoses to make sure it is well sealed and not leaking air or fuel vapors. If it can't maintain the right level of vacuum for a certain time, the computer activates your check engine light.
