blower fan not working

D

DOA

i have a 99 legacy 2.5gt sedan...the fan blower stopped working 2 days
ago and this does not change from AC, heater or plain air. i know the
delays and resistors are the problem when only speed 4 works, as it
bypasses....is my actual fan seized? is it a brusher?
i found out that if i drive the car for like 20 mins the fan kicks on.
all the setting work. but if i turn the car off it takes another 20
mins to kick on again. what is the cause of this?

Haven't a clue whether this applies to you, but I have seen fan motors
(mostly AC types) where the bushings were mucked up to the point
where the motor wouldn't turn. After awhile, the armature got hot
from being stalled out and the motor would slowly start to turn,
gradually gaining speed until it seemed to be acting normally.
Never done a blower on a Scoobie, but on other Japanese cars taking
out the glove box will give you access to the motor. Sometimes you
can see the squirrel cage when in the recirc position and give the
cage a push to see if it is stiff. Or just take the whole motor out
if accessable.

ill look at it today. how much does a new fan cost? i was hoping it
was just a resistor.

Don't know what they cost...call the dealer. If it's just a resistor,
the fan will work in the highest speed position. If the motor seized,
you may be able to lube the bushings either with or without taking it
apart. If the motor is cooked, try a wrecking yard.

Turn the fan switch on and the ignition key to run (don't start the engine).
Tap the fan motor with a hammer handle or other suitable club. If the fan
motor starts to run, then it needs new brushes.
