Auxiliary input for 2009 Outback Sport

Is anyone using the auxiliary input in a 2009 Outback Sport? Is the
input only good with iPods? I have connected a regular MP3 player to
it with no success. The audio is very low when the volume on the MP3
player is high. I am trying to understand the nature of this input
jack. All I know is that I can purchase an adaptor to connect an
iPod. I don't want to spend $150 for the adaptor + $200 for an iPod.
Appreciate anyone's input!

I don't imagine that the aux input on a 2009 differs greatly from my 2008.
I've found that any "normal" earphone level from my portable devices is
sufficient to drive the aux input. I do need to turn up the aux volume on
the head unit from what it normally would be for regular radio or CD
listening but not by much. Have you experimented with different sound
sources, different cables, mp3 player volume control, aux volume control?

Thanks for your response. It is very encouraging to me. I have not
experimented with different cables or players yet but will do so
soon. Tomorrow my wife is picking up a 2010 Forester and I will have
more options to try. I'll post the results in a few days. Thanks
again John!
