AccessPORT

Folks,

Are there any users of the Cobb Tuning AccessPORT Stage 1 on your stock WRX
out there? Do you notice much improvement in power and torque? Did your
gas mileage drop much? Would you recommend it? Thanks for your answers.

Yes, I have an AP. I am very happy with it. There was an instant
difference in hp and torque. Gas mileage for some went up, for me its a
little less than before (but I hammer the go pedal more after the AP).

I'd recommend it. You might want to visit the forums at
www.cobbtuning.com and get more input.

My wife uses an AP on her car. Her car was pretty quick before going to
stage 1. I was able to stay with another stage 1 car or beat stock
ones. Going to stage 1 really didn't really help much, just topend.
MPG stayed around the same and economy wasn't a help either. Stage 2 is
a total different world; so much smoother, faster, easier to drive, MPG
increased 1 to 2mpg. I also recommend buying it.

Accessport is a very good product, however if you REALLY want to control
every aspect of the tuning, its hard to not at least consider a TurboXS UTEC
or Vishnu Exede, both offer more tuning flexability from my understanding.

No, if you want to control every controllable
parameter, the Accessport would not be the way to
go.

Of course, with all that control, comes
responsiblity. You'd better know what all those
"aspects" do, how the interplay, and where to
stop with each, before you blow your engine---
because YOU are the safety net!

A good analogy is having an investment portfolio
based on mutual funds, versus individual stocks.

Hi David,
I had Cobb AECU for abt a yr, and then upgrade to Stage 2. Stage 1 was a
pleasant bump in power. My 02 WRX has intercooler hoses and a Prodrive
axleback at the time. You won't be awed by the ~30HP increase, but the car
will drive smoother and the power kicks in at earlier RPMs. I keep gas
records and didnt see any mileage drop from stock (~23.5mpg). If you're
looking for a set-it and forget-it upgrade, I definitely recommend Cobb.

Cheers,
Dai

what does the AccessPORT and other products mentioned here do?

They allow for fine tuning of the fuel/timing/boost curves to extract the
most hp out of your vehicle. They can also provide such things as launch
control, shift light triggers, nitrous solenoid triggers, etc, etc....

Basically, they give you more than enough tools to blow up your vehicle if
you don't know what the heck you're doing.

The AccessPort doesn't do that...

Nor does it provide for any of those...

The Accessport allows loading modified engine
operating parameters (collectively known as
"maps") that are written by Cobb Tuning. The
maps are user selectable, but the map content is
not---it's a "set it and forget it" deal.

The concept is to provide the end user with a
completed package that will render improved
performance and reliability, with minimal
attention & tweaking by the end user...not the
absolute maximum possible, but not risking the
engine, either...an analogy might be investing in
a S&P 500 index fund, versus making your own
picks of individual stocks.

UTEC sounds more like what you're talking about.
There's a few others that allow greater
control/gains/risks, as well.
