2nd or 3rd gen impreza?

I am interested in buying a 2nd or 3rd gen impreza but not sure what one to go for. From my knowledge i know the 3rd gen will have slightly higher performance levels but which would be more tunable and easier to make the most power. Also what other cars are around the same performance levels ( except evo's ).

Any advice appreciated
