Our local mechanic is someone I deem trustworthy and reliable. During some repairs & chasing down other issues, he has found what he believes to be engine oil in the coolant. He offered that this will mean a leak internally in the engine, and has asked me to take the vehicle to a Subaru specialist. He also discovered that radiator hoses were beginning to bulge, and he replaced those. Ditto for thermostat - it appeared to have failed and has been changed out.
I've done a search through the forums, and found some great leads (eg : ECMBuster with advice on special pressure testing procedures).
As much as I try to avoid doing any work with dealerships, it sounds like we may need to get the Crosstrek in front of them, in order to be able to further diagnose the issue and access the right test equipment. Our mechanic says it is fine to use the car for now, but that this issue is of course serious and needs attention.
1. Does anyone know if there's a 'sticky' or equivalent post that enables us to look up the known issues for different engine models?
2. Might it be better to trace down a repair shop that actually specializes in radiator/cooling systems?
