Any ideas why the brake light would come on and stay on in cold temps

Your brake fluid level is low. Because the reservoir provides make up fluid in the calipers as the brake pads wear down, there is a good chance that you need new pads, sooner than later. You should get them inspected at a quality brake shop or dealership.
