I am waiting for the call out mechanic to tell me I have a dead main battery
in a seven month old vehicle . The car won't start and the alarm has been
going since 2am.[The neighbours love me!]
The main problem apart from the previous is that there is NO way I can
discover how to lock the rear tailgate when the battery is low ?????

You sure that there's no keyhole in the tailgate? Seems like a strange
thing to omit from a new car, but who knows.

There is no tailgate key hole on the '03 Forester. Only key hole is on
driver's door - otherwise no other key holes.
No problem if you use remote but dead battery would be a problem.

You gotta be kidding me... Oh man, maybe GM is having more stupidity
influence than I originally thought.

If I had a new Forester, I'd probably invest in one of those standalone jump
starting battery packs, just in case.

Is it just me or is the auto industry as a whole moving toward a "...in a
perfect world" scenario, where they design things as if nothing will ever go
wrong? I was just hearing about some new Ford transmissions that are
supposedly designed so that the fluid stays in there for the life of the
vehicle - no changes.

It is funny. I had a '98 Forester with key locks on drivers and passengers
doors and tail gate. Car was totaled and my '03 is as described. What was
funny on the '98 was that key would not work on drivers lock. I never used
it but always used remote. If the dead battery situation were to happen
today with a similar lock problem, I could not get in car ;)

The Nissan Altimas are also like this...no trunk opening with a key.
Either with the electronic key or from inside.
