I have a 2001 outback that I love. My question is, when should I be looking
at replacing the CV boots and what is a fair price for that work? Any
information is welcome. Thank you in advance

Does anyone actually do preventive replacmeent on these?

Ditto. A ripped boot will result in grease being sprayed underneath
the car. A quick peek at each oil change will spot it.

I was having a LOT of trouble with the boot on the left front of the car.
Seemed like I replaced it at least twice each summer. Finally figured out
that it was the car wash which pulled the car through via the front
wheel! Quit washing my car and the boots lasted for years!!!
